Russia deploys about 30,000 troops in Crimea - Colonel-General Koval

About 30,000 Russian troops have currently been deployed in Crimea.

Colonel-General Mykhailo Koval, who heads the task force of the State Border Service of Ukraine in Crimea, said this at a press conference on Friday, a Ukrinform correspondent has reported.

"According to preliminary figures, there are currently about 30,000 Russian soldiers in Crimea, whereas the number of Ukrainian troops was as in a peacetime," Koval said.

He also said that the situation remained tense on the border, particularly at the Krym checkpoint.

Koval said that tonight 12 border guards, including nine women servicemen, had been captured by Russian troops. "A KAMAZ truck came and captured 12 border guards, including nine women, and passed through the border everything they needed," he said.

As reported, President Vladimir Putin said that Russia had not sent troops to Crimea and that armed groups in Russian military uniform were allegedly "Crimean self-defense units."
